So it’s been quite a while since I actually added anything to this blog. The only reason I can give is I’ve been too distracted with other stuff.
As Miles, Marley and Morgan (M3) get older I have been reflecting on how special they are to us and the daily enrichment they provide. As the years go by I realize how precious this limited time on earth actually is. Time that used to drag on now seems like the blink of an eye.
So my re-imagined vision of this blog is that it becomes a place where anyone can share stories of our four legged family members. A community Blog where you can send me stories and pictures and I’ll happily post them. You can e-mail me at buddha517@gmail.com. They could be still with us or have already crossed the rainbow bridge. One thing I know for certain is that by having dogs in our lives we can learn valuable life lessons about the world in general and about ourselves.
The Perfect Day
Effectively I’ll never know how old Miles is but our best guess is 12. For a big dog like a lab that’s pretty stinking old. Almost everyone who meets or has known him has formed an instant affinity for this most special of boys. Since he’s been blind the entire 7 or 8 years we’ve had him I’ve gotten used to the idea that at some point he may lose his eyes either to a trauma (because he doesn’t know when to blink) or because the long term effects of his cataracts.
In Miles’ case its the latter. His eyes have been milky white for several years now, but recently he’s been rubbing them almost constantly and its obviously uncomfortable. After an exam by the Ophthamologist we found out the cataracts had detached the lens his right eye so it floats freely. This has been putting pressure on his cornea making it very uncomfortable for him.
The only real option is eye enucleation (removal). This obviously involves surgery which is of higher risk for an old man like Miles. The fact he has a history of arrhythmia’s and a heart murmur only increase the risk.
While deep down I feel like Miles journey here isn’t done, we want to make sure we don’t take the time we have for granted thus tomorrow being Miles perfect day. I plan on posting more tomorrow night including hopefully some pictures and maybe video. I’ve included his agenda for the day as he requested.
If you aren’t familiar with it I got the idea from an article I read by John Katz.

Ben and Heather, I love reading about Miles. It is so evident how much the two of you love Miles, Marley, and Morgan, and what wonderful parents you are. It would be quite a challenge to take on a blind dog, but Miles could be in no better home.
