The soul of the pack

“A dog has the soul of a philosopher.” Plato

“Friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies.” Aristotle

“Your own soul is nourished when you are kind; it is destroyed when you are cruel.” King Solomon

So I thought I’d give a little airtime to our version of Jan Brady (the proverbial middle child) who never seems to get a lot of attention our Marley.

Marley is ironically the first dog we adopted but he falls in the middle age wise among the three. Morgan with her abuse issues and Miles being blind get most of the press for one reason or another. And yet when H2 and I talk about the pack, and Marley specifically we always say he’s the soul of our family.

It started when we looked into his eyes years ago and you can just tell despite his anxiety that he has the biggest heart.

Eyes really are the window to the soul.

A few of his unique characteristics:
  • He gets along with all dogs, not just ours
  • He loves all people
  • He is infinitely trainable, just say the word “crate” within earshot and he happily trots off to his den
  • He knows our routines:
    • When I put my shoes on in the morning he knows it’s time for work so he goes and gets in his crate
    • After we give him his pill in the morning he’ll go stand by the front door waiting for me so we can go get the paper
    • Whenever I sit down with a plate he slides in under my feet because he knows that means invariably I’ll drop something that I need him to “clean up”

This is actually right after dinner and he's still holding out hope I'll sit back down and drop something else.

  • He is a true watch dog, he knows when there is a disturbance or company and communicates it (not in an obnoxious way)
  • He loves and keeps track of Heather, all I have to say is “where’s momma” and he’s off to find her and won’t stop until he does

Marley has lost some weight since we’ve been in Florida and we are going to get him into the vet to make sure he isn’t sick. In a lot of ways he’s really the glue that bonds our little family together and the thought of our pack without him would leave a big void.

He is so sweet and mostly obedient despite the fact he's a total wing nut.

I miss Marley! He’s a such great dog and is perfectly content being Jan Brady. He just loves being “man’s best friend.” What a nice tribute to him. I especially like the photo of him lying down next to the words about how he’s a true watch dog. ha!
