John’s Pass

“If one is lucky, a solitary fantasy can totally transform one million realities.” –  Maya Angelou

“May good luck be your friend in whatever you do and may trouble be always a stranger to you.” –  Irish Blessings

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. I know this age old adage may be a little tired but I can tell you I believe it more now than ever before based on where we ended up settling down.

There are a lot of sleepy and not so sleepy beach towns along the St. Pete coast and the section we settled in has been more than we could have dreamed of. Our little area was established in 1944 and has about 830 homes and not quite 1700 people. The thing that makes it unique and how we lucked out is that most of the beach communities consist of high rise condos and hotel beach resorts interspersed with restaurants and bars to support those buildings.

Not so in Redington Beach, our little stretch is almost exclusively single family homes with no short term rentals or commercial establishments. Which makes for a quiet, calm, slow paced environment.

But we don’t have to go far to find a plethora of food, drink and other distractions. One such area that we really like is John’s Pass. It was actually cut in 1848 by a hurricane and now is a multidimensional hub of food, tourism and commerce. My father in-law described it as a nicer version of Rehoboth in Delaware (without the Dollie’s).

We like to go down for lunch or ice cream and just walk around. There are a lot of dolphins in the area and we were lucky enough to see them tooling around the last time we were there.

One of the coolest things for me coming from a land locked state is getting to watch the draw bridges at work when tall mast sail boats come through. Okay so it may be a little juvenile to get so much entertainment out of that but I can’t help it.
