So today as we are off to look at houses Miles reminded me of the how we all need to feel grounded in some way for our own feeling of safety when things are new and uncertain. For me it’s pretty easy, in this technological age I’m merely a text, e-mail or even blog comment away from feeling connected to things much more familiar and for that I’m thankful. For Miles it’s not so easy, every step is a new adventure as he tries to navigate a completely new environment.
We experienced this at our old house as well where he refused to go down the hall because he couldn’t get his bearings. So to solve that we bought Flor carpet tiles and created a pathway through our home that he could easily use and understand his location at all times. As long as he stayed on his path he was free to move about as he wanted. In this new apartment we have a mix of tile and a little carpet and what we’ve found is that Miles didn’t want to come out of the bedroom. We’ve purposely put his water dish on the tile outside the room so he has to come out for something other than just nature breaks. What made me think of this whole connection thing was the fact that every time he goes for the water he keeps one paw on the carpet, thus ensuring his connection to what he knows.
Lesson for the day I guess is don’ t be afraid to take that step that at first seems cold and unfamiliar there may be a payoff well worth the risk.
Anyhow it loos like our travels will be hot and sweaty today as we penetrate the coast a little further on the quest for that place that feels just right.
And by all means make sure and get plenty of rest!

Hey Ben,
This is pretty darn cool. I was just reading all of you posts. This is a great way for all of your friends in CO to feel connected with you. Probably will feel unsettled for a while with temp living, but as long as you and Heather stick by him I am sure all of the dogs will adjust. They arent going to enjoy the humidity and heat in the summer but I beat they will love playing in the water and walking on the beaches. Good luck with house hunting.
